  • Meeting called to order (JB)
  • CB's ginger mead
    • Well received
    • 1.5oz ginger, roughly chopped per gallon
    • Not too hot, very clean
  • BM's high gravity homebrew
    • Seemed to stall out, still some fermentable sugars left
    • Hoped for some more carbonation (bottle conditioning), but there was some carbonation there
  • Mugwort discussion
    • Reseeds/propagates like crazy
    • Approximate dosage of 1 teaspoon/gallon of wort still yields really strong flavors
    • Consider using less mugwort, down to 1/4 teaspoon/gallon
  • SK's "I Feel Bad For Me" (Hoof Hearted, Marengo) Double Dry Hopped IPA
    • Very clean
    • Citra hops really come through
    • Pretty good, especially considering it's only 5%
    • Seems to have good body considering its gravity
    • Bitterness is really not there, but the signature IPA hoppy flavor is
  • JB's "Who Cooks for You" (Jackie-O's Brewing, Columbus) Hazy IPA
    • Very dry by comparison to I Feel Bad For Me
    • More bitter
    • Not as well received
    • Still a good IPA, but doesn't seem as well balanced
  • JB's "Rain Delay" (JAFB, Wooster) IPA
    • Better than the Jackie-O's
    • Well received
    • JAFB aromas, possibly a signature from the yeast
  • SK's "Absolution" (Phoenix Brewing, Mansfield) Black IPA
    • Definitely dark in color
    • Bitter, but doesn't scream IPA
    • Seems like the malt overcomes the hops
    • Lots of bittering hops
    • CB refuses to acknowledge that this is an IPA
  • BJCP Standards Comparisons for IPAs
    • American IPA: 40-70 IBU, 1.008-1.014 FG
    • English IPA: 40-60 IBU, 1.010-1.018 FG
  • CB's "Midwest IPA" (Great Lakes Brewing Company, Cleveland) IPA
    • Sweet maltiness, crystal or maybe corn malt or corn sugar?
    • Reminds of malt syrup beer
    • Distinct "Great Lakes" smell
    • Not well received by comparison to others
  • A discussion on dry hopping
    • Merits of adding hops at the peak of krausen?
    • Probably not, though it does introduce oxygen, which the yeast would like
  • BM's "Discount Nachos" (Hoof Hearted, Marengo)
    • Smells like the light first one
    • Well received
    • Somewhat sweet, but also has roundness
    • Slight peppery notes, but not as much bitterness
  • CB's homebrew dunkel
    • Strong banana on the nose, stays on the palette
    • Maybe temperature is playing into the flavors
    • Lead to a discussion on a hefeweizen with a shot of skeeter pee to fix it
  • SK's "Clear Eyes" (Dankhouse, Newark) IPA
    • A good representation of the style
    • Only slightly hazy
    • Well received
